Bio Balls: are approximately 1" diameter plastic spheres covered with pointed projections. This structure provides a very large surface area on which "beneficial bacteria" may grow. These balls are commonly used in the last step of a filtration system which has removed gross impurities through mechanical filtration.

The mechanically filtered aquarium water then travels over these balls (which are exposed to the air) back into the tank. The high surface area, combined with exposure to oxygen in the air, permits the growth of the "beneficial bacteria" which eliminates all traces of ammonia and converts it into nitrates.
